The 5RF resilience project

A tool was created, the 5RF Workbook, to help increase psychological resilience in EMS. It shows how to strengthen the 5 coping factors in a step by step way. It includes worksheets that can be filled-in and saved.

To download the workbook as a PDF file click the image below and enter the password provided in your email.

Note: Once the Workbook loads into your browser, make sure to save it before doing any editing otherwise any work you do will be lost.

“Drs. Gilbert and Bilsker have produced a beautifully on-target handbook to assist paramedics in coping with their work, and their off-hours too. Before I’d finished reading it, I was using its tips and strategies in sessions with paramedic clients. Bravo!”

In 2017, the WorkSafeBC First Responders Mental Health Committee reached out to Vancouver Psych Safety to create a customized approach for strengthening resilience in BCEHS personnel.

A survey was sent to BCEHS staff (700 responded!) and interviews were conducted to learn from EMS personnel how they cope with the stress of this work. Analysis of the data showed 5 Resilience Factors (5RFs) critical to resilient coping: Balance, Self-Acceptance, Trusted Support, Meaning in Work and Physical Self-Care.
